PIT BULL PLAY TIME-

                                         Socialization -

Socializing your Pit Bull with as many PEOPLE as possible                         IS A GREAT THING !!!

Socializing your Pit bull with as many DOGS as possible:

                               NOT SUCH A GREAT THING!!!

Dogs do not have to be best buddies with other dogs , YET  we 2 legged beings are always trying to humanize the 4 legged. However you should spend your engeries and  strive  for your Pitbull to be "other dog tolerant "and even ignore other dogs while on leash.  SLOW and SMALL is  the smartest way to socialize your dog.

YOU should start in a small obedience class where all dogs are learning their manners in a structured atmosphere.

Slowly move towards getting familiar with another dog without contact such as a side by side walk while watching their body language for their compatiablity , If all looks good  continue along this path for as many days as it takes for them and yourself to be comfortable. Once you have decided to let your dog have full contact make sure your dog is well exercised and knows the other dog pretty well and slowly let them sniff each other  while you keep a positive relaxed energy and happy voice tones. Praise them  and practice calling them back to you to control any  arousal or excited behavior on their part and yours.

Do not allow any Tugging games or mounting. If you see any negative  or dominant body langauge such as stiff necking, putting their head on top of the others, prickly hair standing up, slowly and calmly reattach the leash and slowly walk alway.   This doesnt mean failure ...all this means is that it didnt happen today and try again another day.

Should a tiff happen between the dogs dont take it personally. All dogs have tiffs from time to time. It is how you respond that sets the tone . Just know that you may have pushed  the first play session too far, too fast or too long and on the next time around take it even slower with less play time .  A good rule to remember is :

Take it SLOW , always end a good thing early and know that it is wiser to keep your dog socialized with a small group of known doggie friends

. To be able to handle social encounters it  is important to understand your dogs body language
